Eleven year old singer/songwriter, Miranda Finn, is lending her voice to support a movement to urge the making of a “Beautiful and Bald” Barbie.  Miranda’s song “Maybe I Can Change This World,” was first heard on YouTube by Jane Bingham, one of the leaders of the Facebook movement challenging Mattel to make a Barbie that would support pediatric cancer patients suffering from hair loss.

Bingham contacted Miranda and asked if her song could be used as the movement’s theme song.  Miranda volunteered her support for the project and her mother, Robin, said that Miranda was willing to perform her song in order to promote the Beautiful and Bald Barbie movement anywhere.

Miranda’s father is Dr. Michael Hyman of Santa Clarita’s Bladder Wellness Center.

“I didn’t have to listen to the whole song to understand that this was the perfect song,” said Becky Sypin, co-creator of the movement with Bingham.

Sypin added that the Miranda’s song was perfect because it was sung by a young girl and the words illustrated her desire to make a change, no matter how small.

“We’re doing this for the younger girls…it’s really about the kids,” said Sypin.

Sypin and Bingham began the Beautiful and Bald Barbie movement less than a month ago and already have more than 130,000 supporters on their Facebook page.  Bingham is battling lymphoma and Sypin’s daughter was diagnosed with leukemia in January 2011.

Beautiful and Bald Barbie is a movement that is working towards creating a “Barbie” or “Barbie type doll” that is bald to support those suffering from alopecia, cancer, and trichotillomania. The goal of this “Barbie” is for all children to know that bald is beautiful and to be better equipped to deal with their own hair loss or that of a loved one. They envision some portion of the proceeds from this doll would go to pediatric cancer research.
