Two Killed In Gorman Traffic Accident Involving Fire Camp Crew Bus

The driver of a passenger car and a County Fire inmate crewmember were killed when a camp crew bus for the Los Angeles County Fire Department was involved in a head-on collision in the Gorman area.


The accident occurred at 2:18 p.m. Tuesday on the eastbound 138 at Quail Lake Road. Southbound I-5 to the Eastbound 138 was closed as was Highway 138 at Gorman Post Road. A landing zone for medical helicopters was established on the 138

According to the California Highway Patrol, Milton Bacon, 83, of Gardnerville, Nevada, was driving his 2010 Subaru Forester westbound on the 138 east of Siemans Plant Road. Michael Ekindjian, 35, of Hermosa Beach, was driving a 2008 Frieghtliner fire bus eastbound on 138, approaching Bacon’s vehicle and carrying 12 camp crew passengers returning from a work project.

For unknown reasons, Bacon allowed his vehicle to drift over the broken yellow line and into the path of Ekindjian’s bus; Ekindjian tried to swerve out of the way, but could not avoid a head-on collision. Bacon sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

The bus rolled over after inpact on the eastbound lane and south shoulder of the road, ejecting passenger and Camp Crew member Fernando Sanchez, 25, of Santa Clarita, who suffered fatal injuries.

CHP and LA County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene to triage the victims; Ekindjian was airlifted from the scene, along with five other members of the camp crew to Antelope Valley Hospital with injuries ranging from moderate to major.

The remaining injured were transported by ground to local hospitals.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the accident.
