With the Oscars coming up, movie lovers will get see their favorite movies and actors honored, but there will be another awards event honoring Hollywood’s younger talent.
Merit Leighton, a 7-year-old actress , and her sister Marlowe Peyton a 5-year-old actress and singer from Valencia will be honored with a C.A.R.E. (Child Actor Recognition Event) Award during a red-carpet ceremony at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Merit has been modeling in catalogs and ad campaigns since she was six months old, but at the age of six she began her TV and film career. Merit is a previous CARE award recipient and will be receiving her second award recognizing her appearances in several national commercials for FUZE, Six Flags, Microsoft and Cox Cable.
Marlowe sings in addition to acting and began her career at the age of four. She is being honored for her work in the feature film The Back Up Plan with Jennifer Lopez which will be released this month. She is also being honored for her appearance on The Jay Leno Show and for her work in an independent short film At What Price.
Merit and Marlowe are also trying to help the planet with recycling. With their own money from acting, they created “The Plastic Patrol” www.theplasticpatrol.org, which encourages kids to help reduce the amount of plastic that could end up in the ocean.
On for its sixth year, The CARE Awards are based on a unique point system where young performers (18 and younger) must qualify with a combination of professional acting work in 2009, academics, union membership, training, a written essay, community service, parent industry knowledge, and several other criteria. CARE honors over 150 of the industry’s youngest actors and actresses for their positive contributions to the entertainment industry.
The C.A.R.E. Awards are sponsored by the BizParentz Foundation, which helps parents with the different aspects of having a child in the entertainment industry.
This year’s CARE event will take place at Universal Studios on Sunday, March 14, and will be held at the Globe Theatre inside Universal Studios Hollywood. For more information visit www.bizparentz.org.
