Reported by Leon Worden, SCVNEWS.COM

A 20-year-old College of the Canyons student died Sunday morning when he lost control of his car in heavy rain on State Route 14 in Agua Dulce.

Brandon P. Silva of Valencia was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:45 a.m. crash on the southbound side of the freeway just south of Agua Dulce Canyon Road.

According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, Silva was driving his four-door 2003 Honda Accord at an estimated 70 mph in heavy rain when he lost control and crashed into the steep dirt and brush embankment that formed the center divider.

The report said the impact “substantially absorbed the speed of the Honda,” which bounced off and came to a rest on its wheels at the right shoulder.

Silva “succumbed to his injuries while at the scene of the collision,” the report said. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at 8:14 a.m.

The CHP report said Silva was wearing his seat belt. Alcohol or drug impairment is not suspected. Silva’s next of kin have been notified.

A Sigalert was issued at 8:31 a.m. and was lifted at 10:11 a.m. when the roadway was reported clear. Some drivers reportedly did U-turns and drove in the wrong direction to exit the freeway while it was blocked.

Silva’s Facebook page indicates he attended COC and started working at Six Flags Magic Mountain in June.
