The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will vote Tuesday on Conflict of Interest and Disclosure Code changes for 10 school districts and government agencies throughout the county, including the Santa Clarita Community College District, which oversees College of the Canyons.
The changes suggested for the SCCCD are a part of a routine annual requirement from the state Fair Political Practices Commission.
The Commission requires all public agencies to adopt conflict of interest codes and to stay in compliance by updating them based on personnel changes.
The agency must then report the changes to their local code reviewing body–in this case, the County Board of Supervisors.
If approved, code changes would further clarify the definition of income that personnel are required to disclose, to include “gifts, loans and travel payments,” according to County Board documents.
The modified code also allows the district CEO or their designee to require less than full disclosure from consultants who are “hired to perform a range of duties that is limited in scope,” according to documents provided to the board.
Several title names within the district would also be changed. The titles Vice President, District Communications, Marketing and External Relations; Executive Assistant to the Chancellor; Biology Professor; Political Science Associate Professor; and Engineering Professor will be removed from the code due to reorganization.
Managing Director, District Communication and Marketing; Special Assistant to the Chancellor/Managing Director, Government Relations and Advocacy; and Director, Student Health Center will be added to the code.
Eric Harnish, COC’s vice president of public information, advocacy and external relations, said the changes are just a “routine maintenance item required to report to the county… (We) hire new people, people leave, and so we have to keep that list current with the county.”
