UPDATE: Fatal Crash In Valencia Friday Night

A woman was struck by a car and killed Friday night while she was walking along Orchard Village Road near Dalbey Drive in Valencia.

The victim’s name had not been released as of midnight.

Officials said she was walking on the curb – Orchard Village has no sidewalk; the shoulder is landscaped with grass and trees – when she was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound at 6 p.m.

According to a statement from Sgt. Richard Cohen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, the suspect sped away and was apprehended a short time later when deputies spotted the vehicle and noticed it had “significant front end damage which prompted the stop and investigation of the driver.”

Deputies determined that the driver “did in fact strike the pedestrian, fleeing the scene after the collision,” Cohen’s statement said.

Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Efflandt identified the suspect as 68-year-old Jonathan Anker. The vehicle he was driving had Arizona license plates, but public records show he lives in Valencia.

Anker was booked at 8:50 p.m. at the SCV Sheriff’s Station in lieu of $50,000 bail. He is being held on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter; the ultimate charges will be determined by the District Attorney’s office. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in San Fernando Superior Court. There was no indication in the official report that drugs or alcohol were a factor.
