UPDATED 12:12 P.M. Wednesday: FINAL – November 8 School Boards, Bond Election Results

By Carol Rock and Leon Worden

Measure E, a bond that will provide $60 million for improvements, modernization and technological upgrades benefiting students in the Newhall School District, passed with a healthy margin in Tuesday’s school-focused election.

Incumbents were reelected in all three seats open on College of the Canyons Board of Trustees; Michelle Jenkins ran unopposed; Bruce Fortine earned 53 percent of the vote for Seat #4 and Scott Wilk was reelected to Seat #5 with the same percentage. In the William S. Hart Union High School District, Governing Board Members Gloria Mercado-Fortine and Steve Sturgeon  were granted new terms with 35 and 33 percent of the vote, respectively. Opponent Heather Davis drew 32 percent of the vote, but not enough to unseat the incumbents.

In the elementary school board races, incumbent Rochelle Weinstein had a generous lead with 42 percent in the Sulphur Springs District race, followed by fellow board member Denis Defigueiredo with 32 percent.

In the Saugus District, long-time board member Rose S. Diaz was unseated by challenger, charter school instructor Stephen S. Winkler, who earned 34 percent of the vote, compared to Diaz’s 29 percent. Incumbent Rose Koscielny came in first with 39 percent of the vote.
