UPDATED 12:33 p.m. Friday
Morning commuters have something to both look at and curse if they have to go near the intersection of Sierra Highway and Newhall Avenue, where the awning of the Chevron Station came down after an early morning crash.
Video from the station’s surveillance cameras (below) capture the impact and customer reaction.
It all started around 2 a.m. when a deputy saw a 2005 Nissan 300ZX stopped in the intersection of Railroad Avenue and 8th Street and attempted to investigate the situation. When he turned his patrol car around and lit up the car ahead of him, it sped southbound down Newhall Avenue and crashed into the service station.

Lt. Joseph Efflandt told KHTS that the vehicle took out four gas pumps and one of the pillars supporting the awning, causing it to come down and trap the vehicle’s two occupants. Driver Travis Kolbo, 30, and his passenger, Kimberly Cameron, 30, had to be extricated from the vehicle and were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for treatment. Efflandt reported that one victim has a broken leg and the other a broken knee.
Power was shut off to the pumps and a small fire was quickly put out. No station personnel or other customers were injured in the incident.
Blood was drawn at the hospital to determine if alcohol or controlled substances were involved; if they are found, the driver could face charges of felony driving under the influence.
Efflandt said that rush hour traffic was moving slowly through the area Friday morning. To view the video from the surveillance cameras, click the link below.
