After two and a half days of deliberation, a Superior Court jury deemed that Michael Dean Stephens is guilty of the murder of Josh Pipho (pictured at right) during a bloody altercation November 24, 2007 in Stevenson Ranch.

The jury found Stephens guilty of second degree murder with special allegations of using a deadly weapon. On a second count of the attempted murder of Chad Weitz, the jury was deadlocked.

During the trial, Deputy District Attorney Mary Sedgwick presented evidence that Pipho was stabbed, and then run over by a car driven by Stephens. The jury also found true the allegations that Stephens used deadly weapons – a knife and a vehicle – to kill Pipho.

The jury was seated the first week of October and listened to a month of graphic testimony in Division H of San Fernando Superior Court.

After the jury announced it was deadlocked 8-4 for guilt in the attempted murder charge, the judge declared a mistrial and scheduled sentencing for Stephens on December 2. Stephens faces 17 years to life in prison.

A decision on whether to retry the attempted murder count is expected to be announced at the next court appearance December 2, in Department H of San Fernando Superior Court.
