More details of the incident and how deputies identified the suspect.

Sgt. John Hudson, of Special Victims Bureau, LASD says the suspect turned himself in to deputies at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station around 3 p.m.. After 25 year-old Casey Crockett is booked he is expected to interviewed by detectives.

Special Victims Bureau Detectives began investigating a case involving the sexual assault of an 11 year-old child at the Westfield Town Center Mall yesterday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m.Detectives say the child was inside a public restroom located in the food court area when he was allegedly sexually assaulted by Crockett.

“The act itself wasn’t witnessed by anybody, however, a mall employee did observe the suspect and the child in a bathroom stall together. Upon seeing this he went and got the child’s father who works at a business in the food court area,” said Hudson.

As the child’s father was walking through the restroom, the suspect 25 year-old Casey Crockett, exited the restroom and fled through a service door.

Crockett was not gone however.

“The suspect came back around to the food court courtyard where TGIF’s is and where the victim’s father saw him and a physical altercation resulted between the father and the suspect,” Hudson said.

Security officers from the mall responded to the fight. They separated the victim’s father and Crockett.  While they were separating the parties, Crockett ran from security officers in the direction of the Santa Clarita Bus Transit Center off McBean Parkway.

When Detectives from SVB arrived at the scene they discovered there was surveillance video, but it wasn’t of much use.

“There is video, but it’s not that clear though because of the distance,” Hudson said.

Hudson credits good team work between SVB detectives and the patrol deputies at Santa Clarita Station for cracking the case.

“During the night while we were out investigating, a couple of patrol deputies from Santa Clarita recalled a similar assault involving two adults that occurred two weeks ago at the mall,” Hudson said.

Detectives contacted that adult victim of sexual assault who was able to provide them with Crockett’s name. From there it was simple to obtain a photo.

Detectives took the photo and created a photo lineup for the victim and his father to view. They reportedly made a positive identification of Crockett.

Hudson says they attempted to locate Crockett at his Saugus home, but  he was not there.

Crockett became aware he was wanted and turned himself in to the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station this afternoon.

Hudson says Crockett is not an employee at the mall.

The previous adult sexual assault is still under investigation.
