UPDATED: One In Custody After Missing Hiker Located

khts_crime_genericUPDATED 12:32 p.m. Wednesday

Deputies and Search and Rescue Volunteers spent most of the night looking for Castaic resident Ivy Degeorge, who had been reported missing after leaving a pair of friends hiking in the Sloan Canyon area, but she was found safe and sound at a friend’s home Wednesday morning.

Not so good for one of her hiking buddies, though, because he’s behind bars.

According to Lt. Mark Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s station, Degeorge left her two male hiking companions last night when they wanted to hike further on the trail. As they hiked into the canyon, they found a camp compound and one of the men entered an unlocked building, removing a chain saw and a tarp, which he placed in the men’s vehicle.

In the meantime, friends and family began worrying about Degeorge, who they said was unfamiliar with the terrain and an inexperienced hiker, and they reported her missing. Station deputies, Search and Rescue and Aero bureau got involved in the search, which went on through the night and was called off at 4 a.m. Degeorge, who went from the hike to a friend’s house, where she slept, heard that they were searching for her and called the sheriff’s department around 7 a.m. to tell them she was safe.

Before receiving that call, deputies found the two men and their unusual haul which looked rather suspicious and they were both detained. Jeffery Scott King, 32, of Canyon Country, was arrested for burglary and an outstanding drunk driving warrant and was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley station, where he is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. The other hiker was released.
