A Newhall mother of three was killed when a 21-year old driver ran a red light and hit another vehicle at Valencia Boulevard and the Mall Entrance. The impact caused her vehicle to spin out of control and careen into a crowd of spectators watching the city’s fireworks show from the sidewalk near Islands Restaurant on Valencia Boulevard.
The victim of the July 4 crash has been identified as Matilda Garnica, 43. She was killed and seven other pedestrians were injured, including her son, who was airlifted to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles with a serious head injury.
It was reported that the driver was distracted by the fireworks over the Westfield Valencia Town Center. The accident reportedly happened at 9:40 p.m., just before the finale of the show. She was not arrested or cited, but the investigation into the crash continues, according to Sheriff’s officials.
The accident was witnessed by hundreds of spectators gathered at the location. Anyone with information that might help investigators is asked to call Sgt. Richard Cohen at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station at 255-1121.
