Routine cleanup yields explosive device.

A city worker could have had a big surprise if the
suspicious pipe he picked up during his routine rounds Wednesday morning had
gone off in his truck.
Sheriff's Arson and Explosives investigators are restricting access to Heritage Park near Newhall Ranch Road and McBean Parkway to bring in canines trained in sniffing out explosives as well as interview residents and park patrons.
A groundskeeper for the city of Santa Clarita found the pipe bomb at the park earlier in the day.
According to Lt. Tom Bryski of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s
station, the groundskeeper picked up the pipe device and brought it to the city’s service yard at Central Park.
Suspicious workers called the sheriff, who dispatched Arson
and Explosives Detectives to the scene.
After cordoning off the area at Central Park for safety, the detectives determined
the device was the real thing and blew it up in a contained environment. No one was injured in the incident.
