150 inmates involved.
UPDATED: 10:06 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20th.
All four jails within the Pitchess Detention Center, where 9,000 inmates are housed, were on lockdown last night after a takeover attempt by 150 inmates Friday afternoon.
According to a statement issued during a press conference at Pitchess Friday afternoon, the inmates barricaded themselves into one room of the East facility around 2 p.m. in an attempt to take over the facility.
Deputies used tear gas in an attempt to disburse the crowd and one deputy was hurt, with an injury to his palm consistent with discharging either a tear gas cannister or pellet bomb. He was taken by ambulance to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
LA County Fire Department units were on standby during the confrontation and fire spokesman Inspector Sam Padilla told KHTS that paramedics examined 90 of the 150 inmates involved in the shutdown. One inmate was taken to the hospital with chest pains.
The lockdown is expected to continue for at least the next 24 hours.
