UPDATED: Sherman Oaks Man Dies After Freak Accident On Freeway

UPDATED: A Sherman Oaks man died Tuesday after what seemed like a minor accident on the Golden State Freeway.

John T. Magee, 66, had stopped on the right shoulder of the northbound I-5 south of Osito Canyon to change a tire. He walked over to the driver’s side door to put something in the car as a Ford Explorer driven by Jacob Mussry, 42, of Beverly Hills passed him.

Mussry was towing a boat behind his Explorer and for an unknown reason, the right tire separated from the axle and rolled off, hitting Magee in his midsection.

CHP Sgt. Rick Miler said that Magee was conscious and talking to officers at the scene, but later died after being transported to the hospital.

According to CHP Officer John Lutz, the accident is under investigation to determine whether the tire’s malfunction was mechanical or if other conditions existed.
