UPDATED: Train Derailment Reported In Littlerock Area

khts_breakingnews2UPDATED 4:11 p.m. Tuesday

Twenty-two cars of a 70-car Union Pacific train traveling eastbound have derailed in the Littlerock area of Palmdale and precautionary evacuations are underway.

According to Inspector Matt Levesque of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, 22 of the 70 cars in the train overturned and have fallen off the rail.

Due to the fact 14 cars being transported were identified to contain hazardous materials, the Los Angeles County Fire Department is asking residents from 87th Street East to 106th Street East between “Avenue S” and “Avenue T” to evacuate as a precaution.

Residents who evacuate are asked to head toward Almondale Middle School (9330 East “Avenue U”, Littlerock Ca). Currently there are 100 homes north of the derailment affected by this evacuation.

“After a visual inspection, I can report that there was no active leaking reported, but our Haz Mat squad is suiting up and using special detectors on each of the frieght cars to make sure there are no off-gasses from the materials,” Levesque said.

The call came in at 1:25 p.m. and sheriff’s deputies from the Palmdale station have set up a command post at 92nd Avenue East and East Avenue T. A group of Santa Clarita Valley units immediately responded and more are enroute to the command post to assist.

“There were no injuries to anyone on the train,” Levesque said.

Levesque said that buildings in the immediate area of the derailment were being evacuated as a precaution, even though the incident occurred in a sparsly populated rural area.

Initial reports that it was a Metrolink train were incorrect; Metrolink spokesperson Sherita Coffelt told KHTS that even though Metrolink and Union Pacific share tracks in the Antelope Valley, this incident occurred five to seven miles from where Metrolink operates.
