Santa Clarita Valley residents and investors Brad Spahr, Gary Cusumano, and Paul Sandrock, announce their purchase of Valencia-based Specialty Motors, Inc., a motor manufacturer and former division of Fisher Scientific International, Inc. (NYSE-FSH).

Specialty Motors, Inc.(SMI) provides fractional horsepower electric motors for a wide range of applications that include medical and lab equipment, athletic equipment, power tools, hand tools and high performance automotive aftermarket products.

The new ownership group includes Brad Spahr, former President and CEO of a number of manufacturing companies including HR Textron of Valencia, CA and Composite Structures, LLC of Monrovia, CA, Gary Cusumano, retired Chairman of The Newhall Land & Farming Co., Paul Sandrock, former CFO of the Pittsburgh Penguins and LA Express as well as various smaller companies and a licensed CPA.   Spahr will serve as President and Sandrock will serve as the company’s CFO.

According to Spahr, “We see a major opportunity to grow the company’s business in a strong niche market. Many people think that electric motor production has moved off shore to or , but our market research showed a large customer base with smaller volume production requirements that are not economical to take off shore and a need for rapid design, development and prototyping services.”

The company intends to compete effectively on the basis of speed, responsiveness and service.  The new management team will emphasize marketing, sales and customer service along with introducing lean manufacturing disciplines on the shop floor to improve throughput.

Specialty Motors, Inc. has been providing a diverse customer base with high quality custom designed electric motors since its founding in 1971.  The company has capabilities for design, manufacturing and assembly as well as a conventional and NC machine shop for rapid prototyping.
