The drunk driver who killed cyclist Joseph Novotny while he rode along Bouquet Canyon Road Saturday morning was charged today with murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit and run and multiple counts of driving under the influence causing injury with prior conviction and driving with a suspended licence due to prior DUI convictions.

Marco Antonio Valencia, a 20-year old Canyon Country man was arraigned for the crime this afternoon in Department S of San Fernando Superior Court. He is being held at Men’s Central Jail in lieu of $1.3 million bail. If convicted, he faces 27 years in prison.

Valencia was arrested and convicted after a drunk driving offense in September 2008 when he struck and knocked down a power pole at Ranier Street and Whites Canyon Road in Canyon Country that knocked out power and created traffic problems.

He was also arrested in December 2007 loitering with fellow gang members at a gas station in Newhall; he was one of eight people arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for sale and participating in a criminal street gang.
