The Valencia
store and a planned retail outlet in Fair Oaks Ranch are the latest victims of
the economy as Circuit City
announced today that they will be closing all 567 U.S.
stores and laying off 34,000 employees.
A customer service representative at the Valencia
store confirmed that the company had been sold to a liquidator Friday morning
and employees had been told that the stores would be closing. A clearance sale
at the store on The Old Road in Valencia
is expected to begin immediately with final store closure anticipated at the
end of March.
The company, which was the second largest electronics retailer in the
country, behind Best Buy, has 34,000 employees. The retailer's Web site and call center will
cease to operate after Jan. 18.
Circuit City’s
Canadian stores will continue to operate. Gift cards will be accepted
throughout the liquidation sale, but will be valueless once the stores are
closed.
