The luxury senior living community recognized the 15 veterans who reside at Oakmont, giving each armed forces member a pin to recognize their service.

“We are honoring our residents who have served our country,” said Mary Dembkowski, marketing director. “It is an honor to have them here, and be able to recognize them.”

Oakmont of Santa Clarita is home to over a dozen veterans going back to World War II, who have served for the armed forces in the United States and the United Kingdom.

“In the next 10 years, we might not have many World War II veterans still with us; it’s an honor to recognize them,” Dembkowski said.

Among the residents honored at Oakmont was Bernie Katz, 86, who was the first veteran to be featured in “Hometown Heroes, Our Local Veterans,” a weekly KHTS series to recognize Santa Clarita veterans.

The ceremony, along with a Memorial Day barbecue, is a yearly tradition to honor the members of the Oakmont of Santa Clarita community who have served.

“This is the third year we have done this event,” said Dembkowski. “It was a big turnout. Many residents in the community came to support our veterans.”

The Veterans Day celebration also featured a raffle to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project, a nonprofit to assist those who have been wounded in combat.

The event came to a close with a guitarist playing patriotic classics to honor those who have spent time in the armed forces.
