Vet’s Nite Out Fundraiser To Send WWII Vets To Washington

war_zone_logoThe local, non-profit organization Back to the War Zone would like to make another trip to Washington, D.C. and bring World War II veterans to see the monument dedicated to honor their service.

“A lot of these people have passed away before they could ever see it or now they’re not in the same financial position to go see it,” said Dick “Tarzan” Jeffrey, Chairman of the Board, Back to the War Zone (photo below, SCVNews.com).

The plan is to take five Santa Clarita World War II veterans to Washington where they will put a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

dick_jeffrey_2“We have five that we’ve selected that we’ve known from before. Those five, there will two from the Army and three from the Marine Corps and we’re looking for a Navy guy we can take back,” Jeffrey said.

To raise money for the trip, a Vet’s Nite Out will be held Thursday, March 29 at Route 66, 18730 Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The $75 minimum donation includes cigar, dinner and entertainment.

Part of the entertainment will be listening to old World War II songs performed by Jimmy Carnelli and memories shared by the veterans.

Jeffrey says they’d like to raise as much money as possible. The more they raise the more veterans they can bring with them. And time is of the essence since many of the World War II veterans are now in their 80s and 90s.

“We’re going to put another group and another group together until we can get them back there before these guys, who are so wanting to go do that, lose the chance because they just run out of time,” said Jeffrey.

Back to the War Zone was founded in 2006 for the purpose of returning veterans to their original area of combat operations as a form of therapeutic treatment to help overcome symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and to involve them as mentors for recent veterans returning from their war zones.
