Violent Crime Slightly Up In SCV, Says FBI

khts_crimeAccording to the FBI, violent crime is on the upswing in the Santa Clarita Valley in the first six months of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008.

The Uniform Crime Reports, issued annually by the agency, show that in early 2009, there was one murder, 10 rapes, 68 robberies and 132 aggravated assaults, compared to no murders, nine rapes, 66 robberies and 98 aggravated assaults reported in early 2008.

Property crimes presented a varied picture, with an increase in burglaries (326 compared to 277 in 2008) and a decrease in larceny/theft – 971, compared to 972; and theft from a motor vehicle – 161 this year, compared to 218). These figures are set off, however, by a spike in arsons; 21 were reported this year, more than tripling the six reported in 2008.

Overall statistics for 2008 offered the following numbers: 417 violent crimes; two murders, 19 rapes, 128 robberies and 268 aggravated assaults. There were 3,133 property crimes in 2008; 638 burglaries, 2,034 larceny/theft, 461 thefts from motor vehicles and 22 arsons.

Nationwide, there has been a four percent decrease in violent crimes in the six-month period; property crimes have decreased by six percent and arsons have decreased by eight percent in the same period.
