Applications are now available for mature women in the local community who would like to apply for the 2010 Virginia Wrage Memorial grants offered by Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley. Application deadline is October 15.
The grants are awarded to women who have struggled to maintain emotional, social and economic independence following a life-altering event. Zonta last year awarded $7,000 in grants to women who needed assistance as they entered a new phase of their lives.
The memorial fund was established in honor of Virginia Wrage, a former Zontian who, at the age of 50, experienced a life altering experience and went on to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a flight attendant. Two years later she was diagnosed with cancer, but before her death she agreed with Zonta to establish a fund in her name for women in similar circumstances.

Grant applications are available through College of the Canyons Financial Aid Office, public libraries in Valencia, Newhall and Canyon Country, Santa Clarita City Hall, and the SCV Resource Center at the City Sports Complex. Applications have also been mailed to a number of local non-profit agencies that offer support to women, or can be accessed online.
Once the Oct. 15 application deadline passes, a Zonta committee will interview qualified applicants in November. Awards will be presented at the Zonta business meeting on Dec. 8.
