The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved an additional waste tire collection event in the Antelope Valley with five collection sites, including one collection site in the Santa Clarita Valley.
The waste tire collection will be held in October 2005, with optional events to be held in October 2006 and 2007, announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
Today’s action approves a contract amendment with The Peterson Group, Inc. to put on the event. In March 2005, Los Angeles County was awarded a grant in the amount of $100,000 from the California Integrated Waste Management Board to conduct additional waste tire collection events in the Antelope and Santa Clarita Valleys in partnership with the Cities of Lancaster, Palmdale, and Santa Clarita.
Since 2000, the Department of Public Works has conducted annual collection events through the Waste Tire Management program, collecting more than 63,000 tires. To date this year, more than 10,000 tires have been collected.
“This vital program curbs illegal tire dumping, encourages recycling and promotes good stewardship of our natural environment,” said Supervisor Antonovich.
