Employees at several of the water agencies being merged into the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency submitted their designs to the 15-member board of directors for consideration at a special joint meeting.

The winning design, a piece of artwork by Castaic Lake Water Agency and Santa Clarita Water Division employee Allen Rodriguez, was one of six finalists voted on by the board at the meeting.

The logo features a water droplet in shades of green, blue and purple meant to signify ecology, surface, ground and recycled water sources, with lines showing the various watersheds of the Santa Clarita Valley.

The other finalists in the logo contest were Robert McLaughlan of Newhall County Water District; Jose Huerta, Jim Moreno and Sergio Flores of Valencia Water Company; and Rick Vasilopulos from Castaic Lake Water Agency.

On Jan. 1 2018, the newly created Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency will replace the Castaic Lake Water Agency, Newhall County Water District, Santa Clarita Water Division and Valencia Water Company.

The new, joint Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency will be the single provider of water to residents in Santa Clarita.

Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency was created from Senate Bill 634, authored by State Senator Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita) and signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in October.

The new agency will bring numerous benefits for the region, according to a press release, including $14 million in savings in the first decade by cutting redundant services and optimizing staffing.

The new agency will promote recycled water and groundwater recharge projects and allowing fully division-based elections.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
