Third time proves the charm for Zimbabwe national.
After three playoff rounds, Denis Watson of Zimbabwe beat out American Loren Roberts with a birdie on the third hole, ending up 7 under par with a total score of 209.
This is Watson’s third Champions Tour title, winning the Senior PGA Championship and the Boeing Classic in 2007. The wins came after a 23-year hiatus. His last win, a 1984 PGA Tour in Las Vegas, resulted in a freak injury and subsequent surgeries that nearly ended his playing career.
Thanking the crowd for their support, Watson made it clear he was glad to be back. His wife, Susan, joined him to admire the distinctive glass sphere that came with his title – and check for $240,000.
In the first playoff round, Brad Bryant was another player 7 under par, but he was eliminated in the third round. Roberts and Bryant tied for second place. Last year’s champion, Tom Purtzer finished in 10th place with a 1 over par. In 2007, Watson tied for 10th place.
The golfers enjoyed sunny weather with a bit of wind all day Sunday, a change from Saturday’s cloudburst.
