Flash Flood Warning Issued As Major Storm Approaches Santa Clarita

A flash flood warning has been issued by the National Weather Service as a large storm heads towards the Santa Clarita Valley, threatening mudslides for burn areas throughout the area.

The flash flood warning is expected to be in effect from Wednesday, March 21 at 11 p.m. to Friday, March 23 at 5 a.m.

“A large and powerful storm system across the eastern Pacific is expected to approach the west coast through Friday,” according to the alert. “Flash flooding and mud and debris flows are likely in and around recent burn areas in the watch area. There is the potential that the flash flood watch will need to be expanded to include areas outside of recent burn areas during the peak of the storm system Wednesday night into Thursday.”

The storm is expected to hit Santa Clarita Tuesday night, with a 70 percent chance of rain, according to officials from the National Weather Service (NWS).

Wednesday has the highest chance for rain according to meteorologists, with a continuous 70 percent chance of rain throughout the afternoon and evening. Other forecasts from outlets such as The Weather Channel place the chance for rain Wednesday at up to 90 percent.

Thursday also has a significant chance of showers, with a 50 percent chance for rain throughout the day and night, according to NWS officials.

The storm is expected to subside by Friday, with a 20 percent chance of rain during the day Friday and clear skies over the weekend, according to officials from the NWS.

The storm is expected to bring a total of 2 to 5 inches across coastal and valley areas, and 5 to 10 inches across the foothills and coastal slopes.

The National Weather Service urged Santa Clarita residents in or below the recently burned areas to take the steps necessary to protect their property, and to remain alert and follow directions of emergency preparedness officials.
