The Los Angeles Department of Public Health are warning residents to take precautions to avoid falling prey to heat-related illness.
“Extreme heat such as this is not just an inconvenience, it can be dangerous and even deadly, but we can protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbors if we take steps to remain cool and hydrated,” said Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, the county’s interim health officer.
Temperatures will reach well over 100 degrees throughout the week, peaking at 108, according to the National Weather Service.
The heat alert is set to be in place for the Santa Clarita, Antelope, San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, as well as downtown Los Angeles, according to officials.

“When temperatures are high, even a few hours of exertion may cause severe dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Others who are frail or have chronic health conditions may develop serious health problems leading to death if they are exposed to high temperatures over several days,” said Gunzenhauser.
Officials also remind residents to never leave children or pets unattended inside closed vehicles.
Health officials have offered tips for people to avoid becoming ill from the heat, including:
– drink lots of cool water, even if you are not thirsty
– wear loose, light-colored clothing
– wear a hat and sunscreen
– avoid strenuous outdoor activity
People without air conditioning who need a break from the heat canvisit cooling centers, such as malls, libraries and senior centers.
