A cold storm is moving through California Monday, bringing the Southland’s coldest temperatures this year, snowfall potentially as low as 1,500 feet, furious winds and the risk of serious traffic disruptions, including road closures, forecasters said.

Mountain roads that could be affected by weather conditions include Interstate 5 near the Grapevine and the 14 Freeway through Soledad Canyon, and Highway 2, the National Weather Service said.

Also possible are snow showers in the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys, according to an NWS statement, which said 1 to 2 inches could fall on I-5.

The snow level is expected to be between 1,500 and 2,500 feet this morning, which will continue into tonight, it said. Between 2 and 4 inches of snow are expected. At the same time, northwest to north winds of between 25 and 35 miles per hour gusting to 50 mph will blow across the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles and Ventura counties

The temperatures will hit a low of around 31 degrees Monday night, prompting frost warnings through Castaic and Santa Clarita Tuesday morning as temperatures dip below freezing.

Clouds are expected to drift out of the SCV by Tuesday, but temperatures will drop to 29 degrees in the night, according to the NWS forecast.

The cold snap is part of a winter storm front moving across the central and western U.S. over president’s day weekend.

The western edge of the storm began moving south over the weekend, from Central California down the along Grapevine to Southern California.

“The western end of the front will extend from the Central Rockies into the Great Basin and Southern California (by Monday),” according to a NWS alert.
