The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a red flag warning for the Santa Clarita Valley as the result of a combination of dry offshore winds and low relative humidity levels.

“A ‘Red Flag Warning’ means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly,” reads the warning on the NWS website. “A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Use extreme caution near fire ignition sources.”
The warning is expected to last from Monday morning through Tuesday evening, according to NWS officials.
“Continued dry offshore flow will persist through the remainder of the week, but there appears to be enough humidity recovery at night and minimums mostly in the teens by Wednesday,” the warning reads. “This will likely allow red flags to expire on time.
Throughout the week, temperatures are expected to peak in the high 80’s, with humidity levels ranging as low as four to 12 percent.
During this time, northeast winds are expected to range from 20 to 35 mph, with isolated gusts as high as 60 mph, according to officials.
As a result of these high winds, a wind advisory has also been issued for the Santa Clarita Valley for Monday.
“Winds this strong may down trees and power lines, causing property damage or power outages,” reads the advisory. “Cross winds and blowing dust can make driving difficult, especially for drivers of high profile vehicles and vehicles towing trailers.”
Officials are advising residents to use extra caution while driving on Monday, and to be prepared for sudden gusts of cross wind.
Officials say that the wind advisory is expected to last through Monday afternoon.
