“(Temperatures) Thursday will be sunny highs to mid to upper 50s, with NE winds 20-30 miles with gust up to 40 miles per hour,” said David Sweet, meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “It will be cold tonight, lows in the lower to mid 30s.”

The red flag warnings are also still in effect until Friday, added Sweet.

Dec. 21 marks the first day of winter each year, known as the winter solstice or the shortest day and longest night of the year, according to the NWS.

Starting this Friday, Dec. 22,  the sun will be up for a few seconds longer each day, which signals the start of a slow, but steady march toward spring.

The reason for this solstice is due to the fact that the Earth is tilted on its axis of rotation at 23.5 degrees, according to the NWS.

In the Northern Hemisphere, it occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, which is located at 23.5 south of the equator and runs through Australia, Chile, southern Brazil, and northern South Africa, according to the NWS.

During the December solstice, the sun’s daily southward movement in the sky appears to pause, as the sun rises and sets at its southernmost points on the horizon before reversing directions.

The County Interim Health Officer is issuing a Cold Weather Warning due to the National Weather Service’s forecast for low temperatures. Wind chill temperatures are expected to be below 32 degrees Fahrenheit until Friday.

The county urges residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the cold.
