Weiss: Santa Clarita’s Loss, Texas’ Gain

WEISSwithkeyMore than 100 people gathered at the city’s activity center Wednesday night to bid farewell to Stephanie and Jim Weiss, longtime residents who are leaving Santa Clarita for a new home in Austin, Texas.

The event was organized by Randy Cressall and Betty Peters to give people a chance to have one last evening with the couple. City Council members Marsha McLean, Laurie Ender and Frank Ferry presented Stephanie with a key to the city, something Ferry said was a rarity.

“I think there’s only about five of these out there,” he said, giving Stephanie (above, left, with Councilmember Ender) a hug and a buss on the cheek.

Ferry said that she was a key player on the Blue Ribbon Task Force that created the Youth Grove in Central Park and worked tirelessly for teens struggling with family conflicts and substance abuse. He joked about her having his cell phone on speed dial, but expressed appreciation for her willingness to get involved on behalf of families in the community.

The pair were presented certificates from the California Senate and Assembly and Rosalind Wayman, representing Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, gave each of them a scroll, acknowledging Jim’s role in supporting Stephanie and her many activities.

An array of guests took the podium to pay tribute, sharing stories of working with the gregarious Stephanie, citing her generosity and tenacity. Cary Quashen, executive director of Action, called her a “diamond in the rough” and presented her with diamond earrings from the group.

A tribute to any public relations consultant wouldn’t be complete without the media stepping in and Signal publisher Ian Lamont took the podium to present a framed front page of The Signal noting the couple’s departure as the lead story. Stephanie’s skills behind the microphone at KHTS were also recognized, as well as the resources she provides reporters of all media outlets.

At the end of a slide show featuring the couple and their children, Tatiana and Justin, there were several shots of an elegant home – the Weiss’s new abode in Austin.

“There will be a schedule,” Stephanie joked as she thanked the speakers. “But everyone is invited to come visit.”
