West Ranch Students Fight Cancer With Lemons

alexslemonade2Students from West Ranch’s National Honor Society set up lemonade stands across the Santa Clarita Valley to fight childhood cancer this weekend.

The five stands sold lemonade from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday to benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, which is devoted to funding childhood cancer research.

“We’re just a bunch of high school kids who want to make a difference in our community and in the lives of children with cancer,” said Jason Wei, President of the National Honor Society at West Ranch High School and organizer of the fundraiser.

The stands, located in Stevenson Ranch, Saugus, Valencia, and Westridge, were run by more than 300 National Honor Society members.

The students set a goal to raise $5,000, and, though the final numbers have yet to be tallied Wei said they easily surpassed $10,000.

The students worked in shifts to sell lemonade, and at Wei’s stand he said they sold over 200 cups of lemonade.

“One guy came to the stand and said that he had donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand on the East Coast, and now on the West Coast, and that really shows the breadth and width  that the foundation has in America,” said Wei.alexslemonade

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was started in 2000 by Alex, a 4-year-old girl who had terminal cancer.

Her goal was to start lemonade stands to help “her doctors” find a cure for all children with cancer.

Before her passing in 2004, Alex set and surpassed her goal of raising $1 million.
