Weste Sworn In As Santa Clarita Mayor

laureneswearinFrank Ferry resumes normal Council seat.

At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, Laurene Weste assumed her role as the mayor of Santa Clarita.

Frank Ferry ended his one-year term, which rotates every December between the five sitting Council members.

After Weste was sworn in, she immediately thanked her fellow Council members, whom she says all subscribe to the teamwork needed to run the City.

Looking forward, Weste previewed some milestones the City will pass in 2010, which will include:

  • Building a new library in downtown Newhall;
  • Completion of the Cross Valley Connector;
  • 130 total traffic signals will be included in synchronization project;
  • Open space expansion;
  • The relaunch of the Healthy Santa Clarita website.

Weste took a deep breath after being named mayor and turned to Marsha McLean, who was voted in as mayor pro tem. “We’ve got a lot of work to do,” she said.

Before Frank Ferry handed over the mayor’s gavel, he highlighted the last year in the City, which he said was full of challenges and victories. Despite the tough economy, he said the City never wavered from its goals.

“We continue to set the bar high,” he said. “You have five council members who love this community.”

Some of the items Ferry cited as successful include the City’s ability to continue work on the Cross Valley Connector, craft a balanced budget and step up the battle against graffiti.

City Manager Ken Pulskamp praised Ferry’s commitment to the younger residents of Santa Clarita.

“I have never in my life seen somebody deal with youth as positively as you do,” he said.

Ferry’s pet project over the course of the year was his “Mayor Dude” outreach program, which created interaction between himself and local students by way of school visits, Twitter and more.
