The teen years can be a difficult time for the teenager and their parents. Parents are often times left wondering why our kids seem to be struggling so much in today’s world.

“Parents can help guide their kids through the difficult time,” said Alex Urbina, Santa Clarita Valley life coach.
“Teens are trying to figure out who they are,” said Urbina. “And you can help them make the transition into adulthood a little easier.”
It is important to focus on your teens’ behavior to determine whether or not they are acting out in unusual ways.
“Parents can often focus on the negative aspects of being a teenager,” said Urbina. “Rather than focusing on why they are acting out.”
“We don’t like their attitude, the talking back,” said Urbina.
Teens can be disrespectful, dishonest, think that they deserve everything, have a sense of entitlement, be withdrawn, and might be argumentative, according to Urbina.
“There could be some core underlying issues going on within our teens that we should become more aware of,” said Urbina.
Urbina suggests parents ask themselves this question:
“Could it be possible that my teen has some unresolved issues from their past that could be the reason, or one of the reasons that is causing them to be acting out in the way that they are?”
Parents who can answer yes to that should consider focusing their attention on the root cause rather than spinning their wheels and focusing on the behavior itself, according to Urbina.
“What is causing my teenager to show up the way that they do?”
“Teenagers should absolutely have consequences for their behavior, and should not be allowed to simply do as they please,” said Urbina.
It just may be deeper issues causing them to act in the way they are, and it’s important for parents to remember that.
