The City’s 25th successful annexation was approved by the Local Agency Formation Commission last week. Following recordation of the annexation within the next week, the 521-acre Whitney Canyon property will be part of the City of Santa Clarita.
Whitney Canyon is located east of the eastern terminus of San Fernando Road, east of SR 14. The entire area is zoned Open Space and is owned by the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
“Whitney Canyon is a beautiful, natural open space that the City and the Conservancy will preserve in perpetuity for future generations,” explains Mayor Cameron Smyth.
The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the City of Santa Clarita, through a joint powers agency, purchased Whitney Canyon Ranch in the Santa Clarita Valley for $4.9 million.
The 521-acre undeveloped property provides outstanding examples of coastal sage scrub, oak woodland, and chaparral. Its location at the end of San Fernando Road, just south of State Route 14, is the gateway to Angeles National Forest and the Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor.
Assemblyman George Runner was instrumental in making the purchase possible with legislation, adding Whitney Canyon to the Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor and by seeking funding from Proposition 12. The property closed escrow today, which completes property acquisition plans by the Conservancy and the City.
