Whitney Canyon Set To Be Cleaned Up

Hiking Club is seeking volunteers to help

ImageThe community hiking club is sponsoring a trash clean up day in Whitney Canyon in conjunction with National Trails Day on June 2nd and 3rd.

This is part of a new wilderness and open spaces stewardship committee sponsored by the hiking club.

The goals of the committee are: Interagency trail maintenance, trash clean up, and beautification of all wild lands and open spaces.

So tomorrow and Sunday will be the first event held with these goals in mind. Whitney Canyon is a Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority property, and is located on San Fernando Road just east of the 14 freeway, (essentially where San Fernando road ends).

Before the MRCA took on the responsibility for the property, the previous owners had a house there, and they buried their trash in the riverbed.

Aside from posing a significant environmental and health risk, the trash is also unsightly.

[view:node_ad=5]The hiking club partnered with the City of Santa Clarita, the MRCA, Placerita Canyon Nature Center, and the community. Each entity has made donations towards this project.

The clean up crews still need donations of items to aid in the project such as trash bags, bottles of water, gloves, tools, wheelbarrows and, of course, labor.

If you would like more information on volunteering or donating, contact Diane Erskine-Hellrigel at 661- 259-2743 or at zuliebear@aol.com. No reservations or RSVPs are required.

The clean up goes from 9am to 3pm both Saturday and Sunday.
