Who In Your Family Is Affected by Pornography Or Sex Addiction?

A wife and husband faced his pornography addiction, then opened the Desert Solace residential recovery center in Utah to provide effective sex addiction recovery programs to others nationwide.

Guest Commentary by Jerri Jorgensen

It may seem like a question out of the blue, but ask yourself: Who in your family is affected by pornography or sex addiction?

I’ve learned from my own journey that so many marriages and families have been destroyed by sexual addiction, of which pornographic addiction or addiction to pornography is a subset.

How Pornography Addiction Can Destroy a Marriage

Mark and Jerri Jorgensen

My story began for me three years ago. I knew there was something wrong in my home, but I didn’t know what it was.

When my husband told me he has struggled with pornography since he was a young teen, and had kept it a secret for more than 30 years, my response was, “Well, just stop it!”

That was the extent of my knowledge of his sexual addiction. Some professionals don’t agree pornography can really be an addiction, but I know first-hand my husband’s pornography addiction nearly destroyed our marriage.

It wasn’t just his behavior of using pornography to escape, and to avoid, but also his isolation and disconnection from our family and God that really caused havoc.

I knew I wanted to stay with my husband, but also knew I could not unless he was very serious about recovery. He was willing to do whatever it took, and that led us to him going to a residential treatment center for sex addiction and pornography addiction more than 1,000 miles away.

Sex Addiction Residential Recovery Center the Answer

We attended individual, couples and outpatient therapy for two years before that. Eventually we realized he needed to remove himself from the everyday stresses of life, detox and work on his pornography addiction. Residential treatment was the answer.

When my husband completed his treatment, we both knew it was our mission in life to open a residential recovery center for sex addiction and pornography addiction. We chose to found it St. George, Utah, our hometown.

Desert Solace Provides Effective Sex Addiction Recovery Programs

Desert Solace logoThe Desert Solace residential recovery center for sexual addiction and/or pornography addiction opened in May 2012. Our center sits on the rim of one of the most beautiful canyons in southern Utah. Desert Solace is on five acres, with horses we use for equine therapy, plus bike trails, hiking, a workout gym and an incredible staff.

Our clinical director is a licensed CSAT (certified sex addiction therapist), and we have a personal trainer, professional chef, and a kind and professional staff that is unsurpassed. We have a spiritually based program, and use the 12-step program and Patrick Carnes model of treatment. As we modeled our own program, we also consulted with Santa Clarita-based ACTION Family Counseling about its successful drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.

Honesty About Sex Addiction Reduces Shame

We stress openness with no secrets, as shame thrives in secrecy.

At Desert Solace, we have created a serene place where men can come to work on their pornography and sex addiction issues. We also have a very strong family program that supports the wives and families of their loved one. I serve as the center’s Family Liaison.

Because pornography addiction can start at a very young age, and with the easy access of computers and the Internet, smart phones, tablets and TV, it’s not “if” our children will see offensive material, but “when.”

We have had very good success at Desert Solace with clients from the ages of 18 to 62 recovering from sex addiction, especially pornography addiction. Yes, we are a success story.

But there are many tragic stories of loss of family, jobs, connection, spirituality and love of self with this behavior. We’ve been there, we can relate and we want to educate as many families as possible about the devastating effects of pornography and sexual addiction. They also need to know there is a way back. There is hope. There is recovery. And recovery is our mission.
