Winds Dying Down

khts_redflagwarning1Gusty winds are expected to continue through today with a red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service, as well as a wind advisory.

The Red Flag warning will be in effect for the Santa Clarita Valley, San Fernando Valley and mountains in Los Angeles and Ventura counties until 3 p.m. today, when the winds are expected to taper off.

The wind advisory will be in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday, with winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts expected to reach 50 mph.

Yesterday, winds caused power outages to more than 30,000 homes in Los Angeles County, but here in Santa Clarita, wind gusts in excess of 50 miles-per-hour sent small debris flying and managed to fell some trees.

Nicole Stinson’s vehicle was damaged when her trashcans were lifted off the ground and slammed into her car.

“Of course as you can imagine I hate the wind. My poor new car,” said Stinson, after assessing the damage.  “But on a positive note, I know there are some that don’t have a car or are taking a bus or walking, so I guess I am really grateful for my dented car.”

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create extreme fire behavior.

No other major incidents of damage have been reported.
