Woman Leads CHP On Chase Down Sierra Highway

By Leon Worden,

A woman was arrested under the 5/14 freeway overpass Saturday after leading California Highway Patrol officers High speed chase on Sierra Hwyon a high-speed chase down Sierra Highway from Agua Dulce – a chase that slowed considerably when her two front tires blew out.

Details are sketchy because the officers handling the case are still in the field as this is written. But the incident started at 12:35 p.m. when a CHP officer evidently stopped the woman at Ward Road and Escondido Canyon Road, between Agua Dulce and Acton.

CHP spokeswoman Monica Posada said a call had come in from a citizen indicating a woman in the area was “5150,” i.e., emotionally disturbed.

It’s not known whether the suspect was stopped for that reason or for a traffic violation. In any case, “it appears the officer made contact with her,” Posada said.

The woman exhibited “unusual behavior” when the officer contacted her, Posada said, and she drove away.

She turned south on Sierra Highway and the chase was on.

Posada said the suspect reached speeds as high as 90 mph on Sierra Highway until CHP officers deployed a spike strip somewhere near the Canyon Country campus of College of the Canyons.

Early reports indicated she managed to drive around the spike strip; yet she came away with two flat tires.

Driving on her rims, she proceeded south on Sierra Highway through Canyon Country. By the time she reached Newhall, this writer observed she was being pursued by eight to 10 CHP and Sheriff’s vehicles.

The chase came to an end on Sierra Highway near Foothill Boulevard under the 5/14 overpass.

Posada said there was a small fire in the car, presumably started from sparking as the suspect drove on her rims. Various small car parts were scattered all along Sierra Highway.

CHP officers took the suspect into custody without incident at 1:17 p.m., Posada said.
