DUI suspect evades LAPD, makes way through Santa Clarita

A car was seen swerving and driving erratically this morning in the San Fernando Valley off of the 118 freeway near Hayvenhurst Blvd.

When the LAPD attempted to pull the car over, the driver made a run for it and a car chase ensued.

The chasing officers tried to subdue the car near Pacoima, conducting a pit maneuver which is meant to guide the car into a spin, allowing police time to maneuver in and block the vehicle from continuing further.

The plan was executed, however the woman driving managed to regain control of her car and continue on through Santa Clarita on the I-5.

LAPD was still in pursuit, and according to Lt. Walker of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department, local deputies would not get involved unless the driver exited the freeway in Santa Clarita.

The speeds of the pursuit have been averaging between 45 and 65 miles per hour.

After the pursuit passed Santa Clarita and headed into the Grapevine, the CHP took over the pursuit. A spike strip was thrown onto the street to try and pop the car’s tires, however it was not successful. CHP spokesman Officer John Lutz said that another spike strip was not immediately thrown out because the woman’s lower rate of speed did not warrant such drastic measures. When spike strips are used, it endangers both the suspect, the officers and the general public.

UPDATE: CHP units in the central division eventually laid down another spike strip on the northbound 99. This time, the spike strips did work and the car was forced to stop. The woman was taken into custody without incident.
