Woman's son lived in house where corpse found Friday morning.

 

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a Canyon Country woman whose skeletal remains were found Friday morning in the Tambora Drive home where her son was living.

 

Coroner’s spokesman Craig Harvey said that sheriff’s detectives were called by the woman’s daughter, who lives in New York, asking for a welfare check on her mother.

“The sheriffs got a report that related to a person’s welfare,” Harvey said. “The person was last known alive around Thanksgiving of last year.”

When deputies arrived at the home, which appears to have fallen into disrepair, they found the skeletal remains. A positive identification is not expected until the middle of next week.

[view:node_ad=5] “Right now, we’re treating this as a noncriminal death in the initial stages of our investigation,” said a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Homicide Division.

 

Harvey said that criminalists were called to the location Friday afternoon to determine the circumstances of the woman’s death and whether foul play was involved. Her son is being questioned by detectives and personnel from the sheriff’s Mental Evaluation Team.

Harvey said that the son had been cashing Social Security checks that may have belonged to his mother.

The woman’s remains are being taken to the coroner’s facilities for full body x-rays, which Harvey said will match with records provided by the woman’s dentist or doctor. It is believed she is a 66-year old Caucasian.
