Work Begins On I-5 Carpool Lane

WORK BEGINS ON HIGH OCCUPANCY VEHICLE (HOV), CARPOOL LANE, FROM  SIMI VALLEY FREEWAY (118) TO ANTELOPE VALLEY FREEWAY (14)

     Sylmar/North San Fernando Valley – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close the following lanes, ramps and connectors of the Golden State Freeway
(I-5) and Foothill Freeway (210) as part of a $41.6-million project to construct High occupancy Vehicle, (HOV), or carpool lanes on northbound and southbound I-5 from Route 118 to Route 14:

From 7 p.m. Monday, May 16 to 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 17:
      The westbound Foothill Freeway (210) connector to northbound I-5

From 9 p.m. Monday, May 16 to 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 17:
      One to two lanes of northbound I-5 from Route 118 to I-405

From 8 p.m. Monday, May 16 to 8 a.m., Tuesday, May 17:
      One to four lanes of northbound I-5 from Balboa Boulevard to Route 14
      Note: Two lanes of northbound I-5 will remain open to motorists.

From 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 to 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 18:
      The westbound Foothill Freeway (210) connector to northbound I-5

From 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 to 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 18:
      One lane of northbound I-5 from Balboa Boulevard to Route 14

From 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 to 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 18:
      The Paxton Street on-ramp to northbound I-5

   Closures are weather permitting and subject to change.  Signs and detours will be posted to assist motorists.  Caltrans reminds motorists that traffic fines are doubled in freeway work zones, and to please SLOW FOR THE CONE ZONE.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will construct High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV), or carpool lanes, on 6.2 miles of the northbound and southbound Golden State Freeway (I-5) from the Simi Freeway (118) to the Antelope Valley Freeway between the San Fernando Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley.

Freeway lane and ramp closures will take place periodically throughout construction.  Signs and detours will be posted to assist motorists.  In addition, press release updates on closures will be distributed to the media, chambers of commerce and cities within the construction area – as well as posted on the Caltrans website (noted below) to keep the public
informed as work progresses.  Construction dates and closures are weather-permitting and subject to change.

The California Highway Patrol will assist with traffic management when necessary.

Caltrans is aware of concerns regarding nighttime noise during construction and will do everything possible to keep the noise to a minimum.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE:

Estimated start of construction is May, 2005 and estimated completion is summer, 2007.

PROJECT BENEFITS:

This HOV project will improve mobility, help to alleviate congestion, encourage carpooling and improve air quality.  In addition, soundwalls will be constructed in various locations along the project area to help improve the quality of life for residents who live alongside the I-5 freeway.

ESTIMATED COST:  $41.6 million
