Workers, Especially Spanish Speakers, Needed For June 5 Election

vote-button1_copyWith fewer than two weeks before the Statewide Presidential Primary Elections, the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, Dean Logan, released a list of cities and communities in Los Angeles County that lack a sufficient number of poll workers. Not only are workers needed, a significant number of those workers should be Spanish speakers.

The Department is calling on local citizens to support the democratic process by volunteering as poll workers on Election Day, Tuesday June 5.

“Community pollworkers are essential to fair and open elections,” said Dean Logan. The  department recruits up to 25,000 poll workers every major election. Pollworkers are assigned to work in their local election precinct. Any registered voter can volunteer to serve their local community by working as a pollworker. It is a chance to assist friends and neighbors in exercising their right to vote.

“Without poll workers elections cannot function,” concluded Logan.

Interestingly, the cities and neighborhoods experiencing pollworker shortages are characterized by high levels of voter turnout and civic participation. Logan is calling on these voters to help support their local polling place.

In the Santa Clarita Valley, more than 20 polling locations need workers, including several Spanish-speakers to translate (noted with a S-# with the number of Spanish speakers needed)

Voting spots are segregated by zip codes.

  • In Canyon Country, 6 workers are needed in the 91351 (S-4); 2 workers are needed in the 91357 (S-2) and 2 in the 91387 (S-2)
  • In Castaic, 4 workers are needed in the 91384
  • In Newhall, 5 polling places in the 91321 will need 11 workers (S-9)
  • In Saugus, 5 locations in the 91350 need 10 workers (S-8)
  • In Stevenson Ranch, 1 location in 91344 needs 2 workers (S-2) and one in the 91381 needs 2 workers (S-2)
  • In Valencia, there are two locations in the 91354, each needs two workers (S-2)

Registered voters residing in these communities are strongly encouraged to volunteer as poll workers for the June 5 Statewide Primary Elections. Pollworkers receive a stipend of up to $105 in appreciation for their service.
