Writing Contest Open To Local Students

Both writing and drawing contest will be held at the Literacy and Arts Festival
[view:node_ad=5]Students in grades 3 through 12 in the Santa Clarita Valley who enjoy drawing cartoons or writing are invited to submit their work in a writing contest currently underway as a prelude to the Children’s Literacy & Arts Festival. Entries are due Oct. 25, and winner will be announced at the festival, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Newhall Park.

The Literacy & Arts Festival is a new program sponsored by the SCV Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation. Primary goal of the festival is to stimulate a love of reading through storytelling, dramatic re-creations of stories, book-related crafts and activities. All activities at the festival will be free of charge except food, thanks to the generosity of event sponsors.

The writing contest is divided into four categories:  cartoon, poetry, editorial and short story. Entries in each category will be judged by grade level: grades 3 through 5; 6 through 8; and 9 through 12. Awards will go to the top two winners in each category.

Cartoons can be submitted in one of three formats—a 4.5-inch square, three 3-inch squares, or one 3 by 9 inch rectangle. Official Education Foundation cartoon templates have been distributed to local teachers or can be downloaded from the festival Web site at http://www.scvcef.com/Lit-Fest/.

Poetry should be a minimum of 12 lines and a maximum of 36 lines. Judging will be based on the ability of the poem to involve readers’ senses, emotions and imagination, technique, word choice, writing style, spelling grammar and mechanics of writing.

Editorials should contain two or more “arguments” to support the viewpoint chosen and should be a maximum of 475 words. They will be judged on the issue chosen, evidence presented to support the writer’s viewpoint, word choice and writing style, organization, and mechanics of writing.

Short stories can be a maximum of 850 words and will be judged on the freshness and originality of ideas, writing style, vivid word choice, use of literary devices and mechanics of writing.

Entries should be turned in to participating schools by Oct. 25 for submission through district offices. Home schooled students or those in private schools can submit their entries directly to the Chamber Education Foundation at 28460 Ave. Stanford, #100, Valencia.

Official entry blanks, rules and judging matrices are available on the Festival Web site at
http://www.scvcef.com/.

Major festival sponsors include Borders, Newhall Land, Time Warner Cable, Little School of Music and Telesis Community Credit Union. Media sponsors include The Magazine of Santa Clarita, The Signal and KHTS Radio. Any proceeds will support the Education Foundation’s programs of classroom grants and scholarships for local graduates.

  1. Hi. I’m a young author in middle school and I’ve been looking to join writing contests but it seems as if though this one has passed. Yet I was wondering if there would be any upcoming writing contests in the year 2016. Thank you and have a happy new year.
