Youth Summit Help Students Learn about Self-Respect

The annual Junior High School Youth Summit will be held on Saturday May 7, 2005 at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex Activities Center located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway. The program starts at 3:00 pm and doors open a half-hour beforehand.

Over 500 middle school students are expected to be in attendance at the summit, this year themed “What’s Cool.” The goal of the program is to bring together local students to discuss current issues facing middle school students. There are five workshops available for youth in attendance: “How do I look? What’s my definition?” “Where you at?” “Are you stressed out to the max?” “Who are your real friends?” and “Choices: Have you chosen yet?”

Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth will speak about the Healthy Santa Clarita program, which strives to educate residents about the benefits of leading an active lifestyle. Mayor Smyth will also be on hand to introduce this year’s keynote speaker, Jeff Yalden. Yalden will be speaking on “The Essence of Self-Respect.”

“We look forward to providing our youth with an opportunity to come together, meet new people, and discuss issues prevalent to today’s middle school students,” says Supervisor for Youth and Family Programs, Ingrid Hardy.

Registration for the summit must be completed in person by April 28, 2005 and costs $5.00. Fees cover workshops, dinner, entertainment, giveaways, and admission to the Impulse Dance at the end of the summit.
