This may sound weird but a friend and I have often joked how cool it would be if we had a zombie apocalypse (what, you and your friends don’t do that too?). Well finally, we got our wish, sort of, in the form of a movie.

I’ve been excited to see this movie since my friend showed me the trailer back in May. From the second I saw Woody Harrelson shooting a zombie in the head and asking if it was the “zombie kill of the week,” only to award the “kill of the week” to an old lady who killed a zombie with a piano, I was sold.

This movie seemed too good to be true. After all, it promised tons of blood and gore garnished with a zany sense of humor, which seemed like a tall order. But it delivers and then some. After seeing this film, I really regret not being able to see the “Zombieland” panel at ComicCon but oh well, enough gushing, BRING ON THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!!!!

Unlike typical zombie movies we don’t get an explanation as to what happened. No virus, no medical experiment gone wrong, no…nothing. We are told by Columbus (played by Jesse Eisenberg of “Adventureland”, “The Squid and the Whale”) that the zombie apocalypse has happened and that all of the humans who couldn’t survive. Then he explains the rules to survival. The zombies, by the way, are a real threat as they are extremely quick ala “28 Days Later”, they don’t lumber around like in the old school zombie movies.

Anyway, Columbus meets up with Tallahassee, played brilliantly by Woody Harrelson (“Natural Born Killers” “People V.S. Larry Flynt”, “No Country for Old Men”) who is the best action hero in a long time. He is sadistic and gut-bustlingly (literally) hilarious. Tallahassee takes Columbus under his wing and they work together to survive (and so Tallahassee can find the last remaining Twinkies). They both meet up with Wichita played by Emma Stone (“Superbad”, “The House Bunny”, “The Rocker”) and her sister Little Rock played by Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”. “Nim’s Island”). After some brief unpleasantness,they agree to head out west to find the last piece of land not inhabited by zombies (though the sisters have an ulterior motive).

I can not tell you enough how awesome this movie was, there is none other like it. It may be compared to “Shaun of the Dead” or “Planet Terror” but while both of these are great movies, “Zombieland” is its own film. While I expected the violence and humor to be both ridiculous and top notch, it’s the heart that stood out to me. These characters all have depth to them and that’s what helped make this film great. Credit the actors, especially Woody Harrelson who proves yet again how truly talented he really is. Also there is an amazing cameo that is worth the price of admission on its own, take my word for it. I won’t say who it is because even in Zombieland I have morals.

Obviously this movie is not for kids. Should you find yourself in the mood for something less bloody, check out Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It” starring “Juno” herself, Ellen Page. There is also Michael Moore’s new film “Capitalism: A Love Story”, and for two weeks only a 3D double feature of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2”.
