There is no doubt about it, Newhall Elementary has some Junior Einsteins in its midst. For the 3rd year in a row Newhall Elementary has succeeded in capturing a prize at the Los Angeles County Science Fair. This year Jennifer West brought home an Honorable Mention in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Division for her science project exploring “which dehydration preparation technique produces the best appearing dried fruit”. Jennifer follows Newhall Elementary alums, Christopher LeClair and Saul Avila who each brought home awards in 2007 and 2006 respectively.
Prior to entering the L.A. County Science Fair, Jennifer competed along with 285 other students in the Newhall Elementary Science Fair. Along with the upper grades this year first grader Theo Jouvin entered in the excitement, wowing the judges with his findings. The projects were exceptional and the judges agreed that there were definitely some future scientists making their debut. First place trophies went to 4th graders John Linn and Scott Tompkins, 5th graders Luke Brody and Conner Roberts, and 6th Graders Derek Dietz, Kate Linn, Mitchell Johnson, Jennifer West and Jeeven Virdi.
One of the many attributes Newhall Elementary prides itself on is its annual Science Fair, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. Ethel Carleton has coordinated the school’s Science Fair, showcasing the student’s scientific knowledge, for the past 13 years. Mrs. Carleton is well respected in the school community and each year has outdone herself in regards to judging, coordination and assistance. More than 35 judges attend the event and listen intently as the students explain their hypothesis, procedures and the experimentation that was involved. Hands down Newhall Elementary has the best judges around.
Mrs. Carleton, along with various faculty members, make themselves available to the students during the entire pre-Science Fair period. During this time the students can decide on the project as well as do background research with the teachers’ assistance and garner help gathering needed materials if necessary. Newhall Elementary’s philosophy regarding the Science Fair is to encourage positive attitudes towards science, stimulate the students’ curiosity and foster leaders of tomorrow. It is because of the teachers’ patience and the student’s diligence that 11 students entered this year’s L.A. County Science Fair and one lucky young lady “brought home the gold”.
