Meadows Elementary student Hunter Shapiro Throckmorton has been named “The Most Philosophical 4th Grader in America” based to his entry in the “2008 Philosophy Slam.”
Also placing in the contest from Meadows School: Brandon Fagan, who earned 5th Place in the 4th grade, and Alexis Block who earned 3rd Place in the 6th grade.
Students in the Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) at Meadows School participate in GATE Symposium Days, which are designed and facilitated by Mrs. Beth Judge.
This year one symposium focused on philosophical logic and reasoning. Students were given an opportunity to enter the Philosophy Slam by writing an essay or poem addressing the question, “Is global warming the greatest challenge facing humankind?”
The Kids Philosophy Slam is an annual program designed to make philosophy fun and accessible to all kids in grades K—12, as well as to help promote critical thinking skills and encourage dialogue with other students and adults.
Information about the contest is available on the web site: www.philosophyslam.org.
Throckmorton’s entry:
Is global warming the greatest challenge facing humankind?
I am dying.
My blue ice caps are melting away like ice cubes on concrete.
My water is rising as if it were a stalking tsunami.
There is nowhere for my polar bears to rest.
The skin of my continents is cracking
Like feet that have gone too far.
Soon when you look at my coasts, you will find bodies,
Floating in the sea with broken cities.
Would you help me?
