Sacramento Road Trip Print E-mail

KHTS AM-1220 is more than just a radio station. We are immersed in our community, Santa Clarita.

Our station has created numerous ideas that have become annual events. Our trip to Sacramento is one of those events.

The idea started with a conversation between then State Assemblyman Keith Richman and station owner, Carl Goldman at a charity event in 2005. Assemblyman Richman felt most of our community leaders didn’t have an understanding of the challenges our state legislative officials faced in Sacramento. The two thought it would be a great idea to invite a number of community leaders to visit Sacramento and learn about these challenges. Thus, the Sacramento Road Trip was created.

With the assistance of Valencia Acura owners, Don & Cheri Fleming, along with Carl’s wife and co-station owner, Jeri Seratti-Goldman, the Sacramento Road trip became a reality.

In March 2006 a group of 35 community leaders road up to Sacramento on a bus. The journey became the first annual road trip. KHTS AM-1220 broadcast interviews throughout the ride. The group spent two days meeting with politicians, administrators and other State leaders. For all, it was an enlightening event and word quickly spread throughout the Santa Clarita Valley about the success of the event.

The group decided to add lobbying to their efforts in 2007, based on the successful efforts put together by the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce with their annual Washington DC lobbying journey. Cameron Smyth had replaced Keith Richman as Santa Clarita’s local Assemblyman. He became instrumental in joining KHTS radio and Valencia Acura as sponsors for the Sacramento trip, and in arranging for meetings with key State Officials.

On May 14, 2007 sixty-five community leaders joined the 2nd Annual Road Trip. The group focused on local education and transportation issues, including important items for Santa Clarita elementary schools, junior high and high schools and College of the Canyons. The group also addressed one of the leading transportation issues impacting our Valley, expansion of carpool and truck lanes on Interstate 5.
